Detailed itinerary: Adventure in the Amazon of Manu – Cultural Zone in 4 days and 3 nights

TOUR DAY 1: ADVENTURE FROM CUSCO (3,300 m.a.s.l.) – EXPLORING THE ANDES AND CLOUD FOREST (1,700 m.a.s.l.) – PILCOPATA (600 m.a.s.l.)

We will leave Cusco very early in the morning in one of our comfortable vehicles. During the journey, we will cross valleys and rural communities that will offer us an authentic view of Andean life.

Visit to the Pre-Incan Tombs of the Lupaca Culture:

Our first stop will be at the pre-Incan tombs of the Lupaca culture, where you can learn about the rich history of this ancient civilization. Next, we will head to Paucartambo, a charming colonial town famous for its architecture and traditions. Here, you will have the opportunity to visit the local museum, which offers valuable information about the culture and history of the region.

Lunch in the Cloud Forest:

Along the way, we will enjoy lunch in the stunning cloud forest, a unique ecosystem full of biodiversity. This place is home to endemic species such as the spectacled bear and the cock-of-the-rock, the national bird of Peru, known for its color and unique courtship ritual.

Flora and Fauna Observation:

As we descend through the cloud forest, you will have the opportunity to observe a rich variety of flora, including orchids, bromeliads and ferns. This tour is perfect for nature and photography lovers. Accommodation at Pilcopata Inn Finally, we will arrive at our lodge, Pilcopata Inn, where we will spend the first night surrounded by the natural beauty of the Peruvian jungle. This cozy accommodation will be the ideal starting point to continue our exploration.

TOUR DAY 2: FROM PILCOPATA LODGE TO AMAZON MANU LODGE – PANTANAL EXPLORATION (450 m.a.s.l.)

We will start the day with an early breakfast and an exciting walk through the forest, where we will have the opportunity to observe the fascinating local fauna, including monkeys and various birds. Afterwards, we will visit a coca plantation and a wildlife rescue center, where we will learn about the conservation of endangered species.

Next, we will head to Puerto Atalaya, located on the banks of the Alto Madre de Dios River at 500 m.a.s.l. From there, we will begin a boat descent down the river, an ideal experience to observe the enormous diversity of birds, such as herons, vultures and cormorants.

Upon arrival at the lodge, you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the river before sharing a delicious lunch. In the afternoon, we will venture to a nearby swamp, where we will continue our birdwatching, looking for species such as toucans, woodpeckers and macaws.

As night falls, we will do a special activity: we will search for the alligators’ eyes that glow in the dark, an unforgettable experience in the jungle. We will spend the night at the lodge, surrounded by the natural beauty of the Amazon.

DAY 3: AMAZON MANU LODGE – PARROT CLAY LICK – ZIPLINE – MACHUWASI LAKE (450 m.a.s.l.)

We will start the day very early, boarding our boat heading to the macaw clay lick. This natural wall along the riverbank is a gathering point for various species of parrots, including the blue-headed parrot, the white-eyed parakeet, and the chestnut-fronted macaw. Here, these vibrant birds consume mineral-rich clay, which helps them digest and eliminate toxins.

After this fascinating observation, we will return to our lodge to enjoy a delicious breakfast. After lunch, we will take a 2.5 to 3-hour hike through the forest, where you will be able to appreciate the unique biodiversity of the Amazon.

We will return to the lodge for lunch and then you will have time to rest or cool off in the river. If you prefer a little adrenaline, you can opt for an exciting zipline.

In the afternoon, we will visit Lake Machuwasi, where we will explore on rafts and look for birds such as the hoatzin, a prehistoric species, as well as other animals such as monkeys and capybaras.

As night falls, we will take a night walk through the forest to look for insects and amphibians, a fascinating experience in the jungle. After the walk, we will enjoy a delicious dinner and spend the night at the lodge.

Free Optional Activity: Ziplining at Amazon Manu Lodge:

Guests of the Amazon Manu Lodge have the opportunity to enjoy an exciting ziplining experience in the Amazon rainforest. From the top of platforms built into the trees, you will be able to appreciate unique and impressive views of the jungle canopy as you glide at high speed between the treetops.

All the equipment used in this activity is of high quality and meets safety standards. After the exciting ziplining adventure, you will have the opportunity to rappel 20 meters to the ground, adding a touch of adrenaline to your jungle experience.

DAY 4: MANU AMAZON LODGE – AGUAS CALIENTES – CUSCO

After enjoying a delicious breakfast, you will have the opportunity to observe the hummingbirds surrounding the lodge, a delightful experience in the Amazon rainforest. Then, we will board our boat to return to Puerto Atalaya, where our bus will be ready to take us back to Cusco.

During the journey, we will make a stop for lunch along the way. We estimate that we will arrive in Cusco between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m., thus concluding our unforgettable adventure in the Peruvian Amazon.

Discover the lush Amazon jungle with our tour to the Manu Cultural Zone. From Cusco, you will explore Andean valleys, visit pre-Inca tombs in Paucartambo and enjoy the biodiversity of the cloud forest in the manu reserve. A break at the Amazon Manu Lodge within the reserve, you will live exciting tour experiences such as macaw watching, jungle walks and relaxing natural baths in hot springs before returning to Cusco and finishing your excursion.

DETAILED ITINERARY: MANU CULTURAL ZONE

tour DAY 1: CUSCO (3,300 M.A.L.) – CLOUD FOREST (1,700 M.A.L.) – AMAZON MANU LODGE (400 M.A.L.)

We will leave Cusco very early in the morning in our vehicle. We will cross interesting valleys between the mountains of the Andes and picturesque rural communities. We will visit the pre-Incan tombs of the Lupaca culture and then we will stop in Paucartambo, a beautiful colonial city, and visit the interesting museum of the city. On the way, we will have lunch in the cloud forest.

We will continue our descent through the cloud forest, an area rich in endemic species, such as the spectacled bear and the rooster of the rock, the Peruvian national bird that performs a ritual of unique courtship. We can also see orchids, bromeliads, ferns, etc.

We will continue observing the spectacular nature throughout our trip until we reach to atalaya port and take a motor boat and go 30 minutes down the river to get to our hostel where we will spend our first night.

tour DAY 2: AMAZON MANU LODGE – CLAY LICK – ZIP LINE – MACHUWASI LAKE –NIGHT WALK

Very early in the morning, we will board our boat and head to the macaw clay lick, a wall along the riverbank where different species of parrots, such as the blue-headed parrot, the white-eyed parakeet, the macaw with chestnut front, among others, gathers every morning. Here they eat clay, which is rich in minerals and helps them digest and eliminate toxins from their bodies.

After, we will return to our lodge for a delicious breakfast. After breakfast, we will take a walk through the forest for 2-3 hours. We will return to the lodge for lunch and then rest or swim in the river. After lunch, you will also have the option to go zip-lining. In the afternoon, we will visit Lake Machuwasi, where we will take a rafts to observe birds, such as the prehistoric bird hoatzin and, with luck, other animals such as monkeys and capybaras. Then we will make a nocturnal walk through the forest to look for insects and amphibians. After the night walk, we will have dinner and spend the night.

Optional free activity – zip line:

Our guests at the Amazon Manu Lodge have the opportunity to appreciate a unique and impressive view of the jungle as they fly through the jungle canopy between platforms built high up in the trees. All equipment used is high mountain and safe. After sliding at high speed through the treetops of the incredible Amazon rainforest, you can rappel 25 meters to the ground (fishing optional)

tour DAY 3: AMAZON MANU LODGE – HOT SPRING – CUSCO

After a delicious breakfast, we can go for a swim in the hot spring of Atalaya and then we will board our boat back to Puerto Atalaya where our bus will wait for us to return to Cusco. We will have lunch along the route back to Cusco, and we will arrive around 5:30pm at 6:30p.m.
