DETAILED ITINERARY: MANU CULTURAL ZONE

We will leave Cusco very early in the morning in our vehicle. We will cross interesting valleys between the mountains of the Andes and picturesque rural communities. We will visit the pre-Incan tombs of the Lupaca culture and then we will stop in Paucartambo, a beautiful colonial city, and visit the interesting museum of the city. On the way, we will have lunch in the cloud forest.

We will continue our descent through the cloud forest, an area rich in endemic species, such as the spectacled bear and the rooster of the rock, the Peruvian national bird that performs a ritual of unique courtship. We can also see orchids, bromeliads, ferns, etc.

We will continue observing the spectacular nature throughout our trip until we reach to atalaya port and take a motor boat and go 30 minutes down the river to get to our hostel where we will spend our first night.

Very early in the morning, we will board our boat and head to the macaw clay lick, a wall along the riverbank where different species of parrots, such as the blue-headed parrot, the white-eyed parakeet, the macaw with chestnut front, among others, gathers every morning. Here they eat clay, which is rich in minerals and helps them digest and eliminate toxins from their bodies.

After, we will return to our lodge for a delicious breakfast. After breakfast, we will take a walk through the forest for 2-3 hours. We will return to the lodge for lunch and then rest or swim in the river. After lunch, you will also have the option to go zip-lining. In the afternoon, we will visit Lake Machuwasi, where we will take a rafts to observe birds, such as the prehistoric bird hoatzin and, with luck, other animals such as monkeys and capybaras. Then we will make a nocturnal walk through the forest to look for insects and amphibians. After the night walk, we will have dinner and spend the night.

After a delicious breakfast, we can go for a swim in the hot spring of Atalaya and then we will board our boat back to Puerto Atalaya where our bus will wait for us to return to Cusco. We will have lunch along the route back to Cusco, and we will arrive around 5:30pm at 6:30p.m.

FAQs - Manu Cultural Zone Tour

To begin with, the tour includes all land and river transportation, meals, accommodation at the Amazon Manu Lodge, the activities mentioned in the itinerary, and a specialized guide. However, personal expenses, tips, and alcoholic beverages are not covered.

The tour is considered to be of moderate difficulty. Generally, the walks are 2 to 3 hours long, and the activities don’t require exceptional physical condition, but rather good health to enjoy the days.

In order to prepare for the jungle climate, we recommend wearing light, long-sleeved clothing, long pants, comfortable hiking boots or sneakers, a hat, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a light jacket or windbreaker for the mornings and evenings.

While it is not mandatory, the Peruvian Ministry of Health recommends the yellow fever vaccine for travelers visiting the jungle. Therefore, we suggest you consult with your doctor before your trip.

Yes, along the route and at the lodge, there will be bathrooms available. However, during walks in the jungle, options are limited, so it’s best to use the designated stops.

Despite the tour taking place in the jungle, where rain is common, the activities are designed to be adaptable. In fact, the biodiversity becomes even more visible during the rain. In case of extreme conditions that pose a safety risk, the itinerary may be adjusted at the guide’s discretion.

The lodge offers comfortable accommodation with private rooms and bathrooms. Additionally, it has common areas for rest and socializing, ensuring a pleasant stay in the middle of nature.

Of course. The zip-line is a safe and optional activity. Ultimately, all the equipment is high-mountain certified, and trained staff will assist you at all times.

Unfortunately, cell phone signal and Internet are almost non-existent in the Manu Cultural Zone. This allows for a true disconnection and complete immersion in nature. Consequently, we recommend you notify your family members before departure.

Absolutely. If you have any dietary restrictions, such as being vegetarian or vegan, or if you have any allergies, you simply need to inform us at the time of booking so we can coordinate with our kitchen staff and prepare appropriate meals for you.

While we do our best to find local wildlife, the observation of wild animals depends on many factors and cannot be 100% guaranteed. Nevertheless, our guides are experts in the area and have extensive knowledge of the best locations for sightings.

In the event of a medical emergency, all of our guides are trained in first aid. Furthermore, the lodge has a first-aid kit. If the situation requires it, transportation to the nearest health center will be coordinated.
