Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – Amazon Rainforest Tour Tambopata

Find everything you need to know about our 5-day expedition. Furthermore, if you have specific questions, our team is ready to provide personalized assistance.

1. When is the best time to visit the Macaw Clay Lick in Tambopata?

The Amazon is a year-round destination; however, the best months to observe the Macaw Clay Lick are between May and October. During this period, the weather is drier, which encourages hundreds of birds to gather at the clay banks. In contrast, the rainy season (November to April) offers a lush, vibrant landscape and better chances to navigate smaller jungle tributaries.

2. Is traveling to the Tambopata National Reserve safe?

Absolutely. This region is one of the safest protected areas in Peru. Moreover, our guides are certified in wilderness first aid and possess deep knowledge of the terrain. Additionally, our Sandoval Mejia Lodge maintains constant radio communication and strict safety protocols to ensure your peace of mind throughout the journey.

3. Do I need specific vaccinations like Yellow Fever?

Although the Peruvian government does not strictly require it for entry, the Yellow Fever vaccine is highly recommended for anyone visiting the deep Amazon rainforest. Furthermore, we advise consulting your doctor about malaria prophylaxis and using high-concentration DEET repellent to prevent mosquito-borne illnesses.

4. How difficult is the hike to Sandoval Lake?

The hike to Sandoval Lake is considered moderate. It involves a 5-kilometer (3.1 miles) walk on mostly flat terrain. Nevertheless, the trail can become muddy during the rainy season. For this reason, we provide high-quality rubber boots so you can walk comfortably and safely through the jungle mud without damaging your personal footwear.

5. Is there internet access or electricity at the lodges?

In the heart of the Amazon, we encourage a digital detox. However, we provide electricity via generators during specific hours (usually 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM) so you can charge your cameras and devices. Regarding internet access, signals are very limited or non-existent, which allows for a more authentic connection with the natural environment.

6. What are the chances of seeing a Jaguar during the tour?

Jaguars are the most elusive cats in the rainforest. While we cannot 100% guarantee a sighting, your chances increase significantly during this 5-day itinerary. This is because we travel deep into the Tambopata River toward the Chuncho Clay Lick, a remote area where jaguars are frequently spotted resting on the riverbanks.

7. What kind of clothing should I pack for a 5-day Amazon tour?

We recommend packing lightweight, light-colored, and quick-drying clothing. Specifically, you should bring long-sleeved shirts and long pants to protect yourself from insects. In addition, do not forget a high-quality rain poncho, a wide-brimmed hat, polarized sunglasses, and a swimsuit for enjoying the Amazonian sunsets.

8. Is this tour suitable for children or seniors?

Yes, this tour is suitable for people of all ages with a basic fitness level. However, children under 6 might find the long boat rides a bit tiring. On the other hand, for seniors, our guides can adapt the pace of the walks to ensure everyone enjoys the wildlife without excessive physical strain.

9. How is the food quality during the camping night?

Despite being in a remote location, our professional kitchen staff prepares fresh, hot, and nutritious meals. Even at the campsite near the Macaw Clay Lick, you will enjoy gourmet local dishes that provide the energy needed for the next day's early morning activities.

10. What is the difference between Chuncho and other Clay Licks?

The Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick is one of the largest and most active in the world. Because it is located deep within the reserve's buffer zone, it attracts the largest species of macaws (Red-and-Green, Scarlet, and Blue-and-Yellow) that are rarely seen in smaller or more accessible clay licks.

11. Can I request vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free meals?

Of course. We specialize in tailoring our menu to meet your dietary requirements. Whether you are vegan, vegetarian, or have specific food allergies, simply inform us at the time of booking. Consequently, our chef will prepare safe and delicious options for every meal.

12. What photography equipment do you recommend?

To capture birds and mammals from a distance, we recommend a camera with a telephoto lens (at least 300mm to 600mm). Likewise, a lightweight tripod or monopod is very helpful for the Macaw Clay Lick observation. Also, remember to bring extra batteries and memory cards, as the photographic opportunities are endless.

13. What is the tipping policy for guides and lodge staff?

Tipping is voluntary and not included in the tour price. However, if you feel the service provided by your guide, cooks, or boat captains was exceptional, a tip is a wonderful way to show appreciation. Usually, guests choose to offer tips at the end of the 5-day program.

14. How do you manage waste within the Tambopata Reserve?

We operate with a strict "Leave No Trace" policy. Therefore, all inorganic waste generated during the tour is collected and transported back to Puerto Maldonado for proper recycling. Furthermore, we ask our guests to avoid bringing single-use plastics into the rainforest to protect the ecosystem.

15. What happens if my flight to Puerto Maldonado is delayed?

We understand that travel plans can change. In such cases, our team at the Puerto Maldonado office will coordinate alternative transportation to help you join the group as soon as possible. Therefore, we always recommend booking flights that arrive before 11:00 AM to ensure you don't miss the first day's activities.
